Mahzor

New Mahzorim For Shaare Torah Dedication Campaign

We are in the midst of an exciting opportunity to help build the spiritual life of our community. Having spoken with many members and guests over the years, we have always received positive comments about the quality of our High Holiday services and programs. Our professional and lay leaders consistently create meaningful and inspiring experiences for our entire community.

However, for many years the prayerbooks (called mahzorim) we use in our traditional service have not met our needs. They were published almost 60 years ago. The English translation is stilted and archaic. There is no English transliteration, and very few English readings. There is little opportunity to learn more about the history and meaning of the prayers or to be inspired by supplemental material.

This year, the Conservative movement is publishing a brand new mahzor for the first time in over 30 years. It is called “Mahzor Lev Shalem – A Full Heart.” Our synagogue leadership has reviewed the pre-publication materials, and we believe this new prayerbook will address virtually all the deficiencies of our current one. The English is clear, modern, and poetic. There is a transliteration from Hebrew into English of virtually every prayer which we sing together. Every page is rich with commentary and supplementary readings. It is an extraordinary achievement which took over 10 years to produce.

The mahzor is being made available to congregations at a very low, limited-time, pre-publication price, and our congregation’s leadership has urged us to take advantage of that opportunity. However, we will need the support of our members and friends to make that possible. You can dedicate each mahzor for a $36 contribution. We hope many families will use this as an opportunity to honor or memorialize family members and friends, to be inscribed in a special book plate in each mahzor. Discounts on larger numbers of dedications are also available, as detailed on the dedication order form.

Below are links to a "Frequently Asked Questions" page about our congregation's fundraising effort, as well as a "Dedication Form" for those who wish to participate. Many thanks for your generous gift, allowing us to create inspirational and meaningful holidays for many years.
